K-W Close Regular Season on Top

Posted 19 July 2015 6:46 am

K-W United FC closed out the 2015 PDL regular season Friday at University Stadium in Waterloo against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. United finished their season on a high with a 2-1 win as they prepare to head into the playoffs.

If all results went United's way, they would finish first in the Great Lakes Division. But a Michigan Bucks win over Dayton Dutch Lions meant the Black and Blue clinched second spot.

United came out firing in this one, looking to get an early goal, when full back Ridge Robinson struck the post less than a minute into the contest.

The home side maintained the pressure for the entire half, hoping to finish their job and hoping for a favour from the Dutch Lions.

Ben Polk had the breakthrough when he put United in front in the 20th minute.

Chris Pozniak's men continued the pressure and stretched their lead to two in the 34th minute when Polk found the back of the net again; taking his season tally to nine, most in the K-W squad.

United took the 2-0 lead into the half, hoping to close things out in the final 45 minutes.

The visitors would cut the lead in half in the 59th minute, making it a 2-1 game.

Both sides would exchange opportunities for the last half hour, but nothing would come of it.

Ben Polk was named Man of the Match for his performance.

United escaped 2-1 winners and clinched second spot in the division, setting up a wildcard playoff meeting with rivals Forest City London. The winner plays Des Moines, who won the Heartland Division, in the round of 16.
