K-W United FC saw their seven game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening, losing 2-1 to the Cincinnati Dutch Lions. Samson Sergi scored in extra time to deliver K-W United their second loss of the season.

The loss sets K-W United’s overall record to 7-2-0, still enough to maintain their first-place position in the Great Lakes Division.

Despite K-W United maintaining possession through the first half and searching for opportunities, the Dutch Lions got on the board first when a cross from Ryan Melink found forward Austin Smythe and fooled goalkeeper Scott Levene. It was Melink’s first assist of the season and Smythe’s first goal, bringing them to four and two points respectively.

K-W United was quick to respond as Kamal Miller found the equalizer in the 37th minute, booting it past Dutch Lions goalkeeper Zeus de La Paz. It was Miller’s second goal of the season. Both teams made the most of their opportunities, trying to break the lock, but it remained tied for the remainder of the first half.

The second half wasn’t much different. Both teams buckled down defensively, not letting anything get through. Each team traded pushes, with Cincinnati taking a free kick in the offensive zone in the 57th minute, but it sailed wide, and K-W pressing forward in the 81st minute, trying to find a break in the Dutch Lions defence.

In the end, the Dutch Lions persevered. In the final moments of the game, Sergi delivered the final blow to steal the victory for the Dutch Lions, with a 91st minute strike from distance into the back of the net.

Levene finished the game with a 0.667 save percentage, a two goals against average, and recorded four saves. La Paz recorded one goal against, and faced the threat of six shots, with only one landing on target. The Dutch Lions improved to an overall record of 4-4-0 and currently sit in third place in the division.

Next, K-W United will look to bounce back as they finish their three game road trip against the Dayton Dutch Lions. Kickoff is at 7 pm on Friday June 23 at DOC Stadium.
