Wesley Cain’s two headers were enough to seal the deal in K-W United’s 2-0 victory against the Dayton Dutch Lions on Sunday afternoon. The win improves their overall record to 4-1-0, currently sitting in first place in the Great Lakes Division with 12 points.

It was a game of opportunities for both teams. KW-United pressured the Dutch Lions to defend, forcing Lions goalkeeper Michael Yantz on his toes, where he made two saves in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Dutch Lions defence was stout, keeping K-W United out of the box and off the board.

It was KW-United who capitalized first. In the 29th minute, midfielder Wesley Cain headed a beautiful cross from Liam Callahan for his first goal of the season. Cain found the back of the net again in the same fashion near the end of the half, when he headed in his second goal of the night from a cross by forward Sameer Fathazada in the 43rd minute.

The second half was just as energetic, as both teams maintained pressure, trying to shift momentum in their favour. A key opportunity for the Dutch Lions led to goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair getting bailed out by a K-W United defender, and midfielder Janos Löbe fired a shot that bounced off the far left post. Dayton kept pressuring, aiming for their first goal. Dutch Lions midfielder Kurt Raney had a chance in the 73rd minute, when he fired a shot that sailed right over the crossbar.

Dayton kept pushing, and in the dying minutes, St. Clair saved an incoming free kick in extra time, solidifying the shutout, his third blank sheet of the season. The win improved his save percentage to 0.850 and his goals against average to 0.60 over five games. It was his third blank sheet of the season, making three saves. Yantz finished the day with 10 saves, a 2.17 goals against average, and a 0.833 save percentage.

Next, KW United FC hosts the Derby City Rovers, who will be out for revenge after being defeated 4-0 in their last meeting. Kickoff is at 7:30p.m. at Wilfrid Laurier University Stadium.
