K-W Strikes at the Cove

The Umbro Cup is coming to Kitchener-Waterloo for the second year running.

K-W United FC defeated rivals Forest City London for the two game aggregate trophy. Following a 3-0 win Wednesday evening at University Stadium in Waterloo, United strolled into London Saturday and tacked on two more goals to win the Cup on a 5-0 aggregate score.

Team leading scorer Ben Polk added another to his season tally when he finished off a nice sequence. Ovyind Alseth launched across-field free kick to left back Liam Callahan, who took a touch and fired the ball into the box, finding Polk.

Catching London goalkeeper Mark Haynes off his line, Polk calmly lobbed a header that found the back of the net to open the scoring.

Just four minutes later, it looked as though London would equalize and still have a chance to come back in the tie. London midfielder Pierre Mangold was hauled down in the United penalty box to give the home side a glorious chance to get on the scoreboard.

Forward James Pucci stepped up to take the ensuing kick, and was denied by Nathan Ingham who guessed correctly, paring the ball away from the left side of his net.

Similar to the first leg, United's midfield dominated giving their opponents no time on the ball or any looks on net.

The Black and Blue would add another to their advantage on the stroke of halftime when Polk put midfielder Kyle Rutz in one-on-one with a defender. Rutz would make no mistake as he cut inside and finished into the far post past a sprawling Haynes.

The Umbro Cup was introduced in 2013, and after London won it in its debut season, United have taken it home on back-to-back seasons.

More importantly, the six points takes United's season record to 6-2-0, moving them above London (5-3-1) for second in the Great Lakes Division.

Nathan Ingham was named Man of the Match for his performance.

United continue their chase of top spot in the division June 26th, playing host to Derby City Rovers at 7:30 PM at University Stadium.
